No Longer Struggling With Carpal Tunnel

After spending a long career in labor and doing side gigs as a saxophone player, I started to notice a sharp pain in my wrist and forearm. The first thought in my head was, “Uh oh! Carpal tunnel…” I went to my family practitioner and asked him was if he could check out the pain. Eventually and sure enough, my doctor thought I had carpal tunnel syndrome and recommended me to see a carpal tunnel syndrome specialist. As if this weren’t enough, he suggested surgery to give me some carpal tunnel release. Apparently my median nerve was compressed and needed to be released. This was a difficult decision to make because I had just had surgery on my knee and was still paying the bills for the surgery. I consulted my wife, kids, and my band mates. Luckily I had just retired and my health benefits actually increased as a result of a negotiation between the labor union and the chain of factories I was employed at. After much deliberation and some financial wizardry, my wife and I decided it would be best if I just got it over with and proceeded with my life.

After the surgery I had to wear a brace on my left wrist for six weeks. The pain was awful and I had to take pain medication for most of the six weeks. I basically couldn’t do anything with my wrist or hand. Once the brace was off, I noticed that instead of the stiffness and terrible pain I had experienced previously, I was met with only slight discomfort and numbness. My doctor said that it was very rare for him to see a patient recover from the surgery so quickly. He recommended some therapy but I decided to forgo it since things were starting to get a little more expensive than I could manage.
