Teak Refinishing

When it comes to outdoor furniture, teak furniture is the gold standard by which all other furnishing options are compared with. This is because teak wood has a natural resilience towards weather and termites. This is why teak furniture has become so popular as outdoor furniture. However this does not mean that teak does not need any maintenance or repair. Teak refinishing or teak furniture refinishing is something that needs to be done periodically to keep up its natural luster and resilience. Although compared to other woods, teak does a much better job of taking care of itself. This is because of the natural oils that are contained in it.

The main products needed for teak furniture refinishing are teak oil or teak guard. Even though the wood contains natural amounts of oil, over a period of a few decades this oil starts to diminish. However it can be replenished by purchasing teak oil. Teak oil is an essential oil distilled from the sawdust of the teak wood. Before doing any teak repair with it, the furniture needs to be cleaned and made as dust free as possible. All of the details and corners should be dust free. A brush or clean cloth can be used for this. It is also important that the wood is completely dry before applying the oil.

If teak oil is applied on the wood with moisture present, then there is always the possibility of black spots or other blemishes forming. After teak refinishing is done, other wood coating substances such as varnish, coat or after coat and polish should not be applied. The teak tree is a hard wood native to the tropics, which means it can handle different temperature extremes. Ideally teak repair with oil should be done twice a year. Other than this type of work, teak wood does not demand much attention, maintenance wise.
